Thyroid storm Related words: thyrotoxic crisis, thyrotoxicosis. An acute, life-threatening, hypermetabolic state induced by excessive release of thyroid hormones into the body. The clinical presentation can include fever, excessive sweating, tachycardia, hypertension, hyperdefecation and other gastrointestinal symptoms, and neurological symptoms. Left untreated, thyroid storm can lead to congestive heart failure. Because thyroid storm is almost invariably fatal if left untreated, rapid diagnosis and aggressive treatment are critical.
